A Candle For The Lord
November 7, 2014

I enjoy candles, and have quite the collection. They come in all different shapes, sizes and scents.  I love how they bring warmth and  light to a dark room and create a certain ambiance. If the candle is scented it doesn’t take long until the whole room is filled with it’s fragrance.

When the candle wick is lit that’s when the  candle comes to life. The candle itself is nice looking, but the real essence of the candle doesn’t appear until I light the wick.  Once the wick is lit the real beauty of the candle shines through. A candle isn’t functioning at it’s full potential until it surrenders to the flame.     Once it’s lit, I’m drawn to it.  I’m mesmerized by the flicker of the flame and the warm glow, and could stare at it for hours.

In Proverbs 20:27 it says ~ The spirit of the man is the candle of the Lord.

It’s interesting that our inner most being is referred to as a candle or a lamp of the Lord.  A candle is nothing until it is lit.  It got me asking questions about my walk with the Lord. Am I drawing close to the Master to let Him light the candle wick of my heart?  Am I allowing Him to shine the light on dark areas of my life that are trying to snuff out His flame?  Am I surrendering to His will daily?  Am I reflecting His light to the world around me?

Like a candle that has been burning for a long time, liquid wax builds up around the flame and doesn’t let it burn as brightly as it first did.  It’s only when I cut the wick and drain the wax away that the flame returns to it’s peak performance.

I confess, that my flame is quite low at times.  I allow distractions, stubborn will, sin and other things to diminish the glow.  I want to shine for Jesus.  I want others to see the glory of the Lord reflected in my life.  How about you?

There is a candle in every soul
Some brightly burning, some dark and cold
There is a Spirit who brings a fire
Ignites a candle and makes His home
So carry your candle, run to the darkness
Seek out the helpless, confused and torn
Hold out your candle for all to see it
Take your candle, and go light your world ~
