Heart Health

Create in me a clean heart O God, and renew a right spirit within me!

This Bible verse is one I pray often.  I want my heart to be clean, and in good working order.  There are many things in this world that can damage my spiritual heart.   When I allow pollution in, it sticks like thick plaque, and it affects how I behave, react and live.   The fruit of the spirit cannot grow properly in these conditions and my Christian walk suffers.  I don’t function like I ought to.

Hebrews 12:1 says “…let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith,..”

In the physical sense we try to exercise, eat right,  to keep our hearts in good working order. We try to keep cholesterol buildup from forming in the arteries so they don’t become blocked and cause damage to the heart muscle.

When there is too much arterial plaque buildup the walls of the arteries become hardened and lose their flexibility.  When the arteries are covered by plaque, they become narrow and the life giving blood supply, filled with oxygen, is being cut off.  This causes a myriad of trouble for our bodies, and eventually causes heart damage.

Our spiritual hearts react the same way.  When we allow the pollution of sin to settle into our hearts, they become hardened.  Bitterness, sinful thoughts and behaviors take over and the Living Water that Christ supplies is squeezed out.

Therefore, in our spiritual walk, we should be taking periodic heart checkups, by examining them. We could ask ourselves the following questions.  Are my thoughts, attitudes, behaviors in line with God’s Word?  Am I throwing off all the sin that hinders?  Have I held on to anger, become bitter, been mean-spirited?  Have I crossed the line with my actions, thoughts, words? Are there strongholds in my life that I am not willing to surrender? Etc.

This is the month of Love, and it’s also “Heart health” month.  It is a time to focus on the physical heart, to make sure we are eating well, exercising enough and keeping the heart strong and in good working order.  However, this is also a great time to examine our spiritual hearts too, so that they are functioning well.

Lord!  Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me!
