Guard Your Heart by Don Salmon
February 8, 2015

Pastor Don reminded us in his message today that we need to Guard Our Hearts the same way we guard our homes.  We won’t let just anyone in our front door.  We want credentials, proof of identification or some assurance, that they’ll be safe in our houses.  Yet when it comes to our heart, our central core, we tend to be a little lackadaisical about what we allow.

Ephesians 3:17 tells us that Christ dwells in our hearts.  So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love,  may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,  and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

(1) Be careful what you take in.
Our spiritual and emotional health is affected by the thoughts and images we consume. Fill your heart with Godly messages, because whatever sinks into our hearts will often show back up in our behaviour.

(2) Saturate yourself with God’s Word.
Fill our hearts with God’s truth; read His Word and meditate on it often.  Hear God’s voice and learn His ways.

(3) Surround yourself and stay grounded in PRAYER.
Persevere.  Prayer is the “good food” a heart longs for.  It’s the direct line to God AND our hearts life blood.

(4) Check your motives for what you do with God and for Him.
Everything we do should be done out of a sincere desire to know God, discover His will, and do it.

(5) Put on the whole Armour of God.
Ephesians 6:11 tells us Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.  If we trying to Guard our Heart, we need the Gospel Armour to protect us. The Breastplate of Righteousness, the Shield of Faith, the Sword of Truth, these are the central core armour we need to take on.

If we pay attention to what goes into our hearts, we’ll be pleased with what comes out. The fruit will be good and pleasing.
